Bullring Roof

León, España

Structural typology: ROOF STRUCTURES
Date: June, 2002
Owner: Ayuntamiento de León
Scope: detailed design and construction monitoring

The dome-shaped roof was built over an already existing bullring.

The single-layer fixed roof is a Schwelder-type dome composed of IPC commercial steel profiles (parallels, meridians and diagonals) with a 1/8 rise-span ratio. It is supported on steel pillars at its perimeter.

The moveable roof-section consists of two semi-spheroidal segments, which rest upon three beam rails, located on the fixed roof, and which roll along the aforementioned, therefore allowing the opening of the roof.

The open-close system of the roof is fulfilled via a cable-winch system which transfers the necessary pull required for the timed movement of the moveable segments.
